“Shinboku”, Voula, Greece
‘’Shinboku’’ is a residential building in the southern suburbs of Athens. Composed as a rectilinear volume elevated above a solid plinth, its mass is softened by horizontal timber louvers that wrap the perimeter in continuous bands. These finely spaced wooden fins extend beyond the primary envelope, generating deep overhangs and cantilevered terraces that provide passive solar control while enhancing the building’s dynamic profile.
The façade operates as a climatic filter, reducing direct solar gain and encouraging natural ventilation, essential within a warm southern environment. Behind the brise-soleil skin, glazed openings and recessed balconies create a gradient between interior and exterior space, fostering a seamless indoor–outdoor living experience. Structural elements appear deliberately expressed, with slender steel supports subtly reinforcing the projecting planes and emphasizing horizontality.
Materially, the interplay of warm timber screens, exposed concrete surfaces, and dark-framed glazing establishes a balanced palette of texture and tone. The ground level is defined by a monolithic concrete boundary wall, offering privacy and security while anchoring the composition. Integrated landscaping and planted terraces further soften the architectural language, reinforcing the project’s commitment to environmental responsiveness and contemporary residential refinement.
