The Whale: 5-Star Hotel in Mykonos, Greece

The Whale is an under construction 5 Star Hotel in Mykonos Island, Greece. The buildings concept was based on the unending movement of the sea, the waves and the creatures that live within it.

Through a series of handlings like the abstract reforming of solid volumes, mimicking the forms of many natural elements and movements and redrafting the vocabulary of the traditional mykonian architecture, the whale took its final form.

The overall composition reminds oneself the curves of waves, while the whole building seems to be in constant movement incorporating fluidity as a core element. Somehow as if a giant cetus emerged from the dry land and then created volumes with its tail and body, shaping the final composition. A tail or a fin can be seen in between the curves if someone looks closely.

In parallel, the organic nature of the form, reminds abstractly typologies, forms and shapes that were originally produced in the Cycladic architecture. What someone encounters when visit the mykonian countryside is dry stone walls, rocks, boulders and rudimentary vegetation. All these elements were incorporated as shaping details, adding texture and different spatial experiences to the hotel. Xerophyte vegetation was dispersed scarcely on the field along with palm trees, blending with the movements of the whale and the dry materiality.
